Tuesday Dubai Update #2

Since Saturday's entry, this is second update from Dubai.

The working week in Dubai as elsewhere in the Middle East starts on Saturday. While Malaysia is suffering from the haze/smog, here the problem is dust from fine sand suspended in the air. The sky up to 1 km height or so is greyish coloured because of sand particles. There is sand everywhere; new builidings under construction are surrounded by sand.

There are no natural pre-existing trees and plants here in Dubai. Everything has to be planted and tended with great care. Unlike Malaysia where trucks spray water onto the plants/trees from hoses, in Dubai they use drip irrigation. Water is fed through plastic pipes and in the morning and evening. It makes sense to save water in the desert.

On Sunday night, I had the pleasure of eating Malaysian food at the only restaurant which has Malaysian (Malay) food with the project team. The dishes were quite good and tasted the same as the food in Malaysia. The prices are of course was something else. For a party of five, the cost was D340 (RM 330).

Yesterday in the evening, I ran on the treadmill at the hotel's fitness club. Some 10 minutes into my run, the 10,000 m men's race at the World Athletics Championship, Helsinki started as well. Wow, it was quite amazing to watch the race on TV while I was running too. The race was won by Keninisa Bekelele in 27 min 8 seconds. I finished my 7 km run in 39 min. 24 min. If I had run against Bekelele, I would have been 5 km behind at the finishing line.

Yesterday on the way home, I caught a glimpse of what would be the tallest building in the world in 2008, Burj Dubai. When completed, it will be the tallest in the world at 705 m.

That's all for now.
