Saturday : Dubai Update #1

If you have been following my blog, you would know that I am in Dubai for a week. This place is not for the poor as the costs of living is quite expensive. For example, for lunch I had vegetarian rice briyani and fish masala. This take away meal came with an apple and a yogurt desert. For just four items, the cost was Dirham 20 (RM 20).

During the daytime it is terribly hot - 42 degrees Celcius today. What makes it worse, is the hot dry wind blowing from the desert. In spite of the palm trees and plants planted in the city, Dubai is still after all located in the desert.

Last night I went to Deira City Centre, one of the many air-conditioned malls in Dubai. The mall had many shops but they were quite small in size. The goods were the usual things found in such malls ; electronics, clothes etc. I stopped by a sports store to buy a Nike Dri Fit running T-shirt. It was not cheap at RM 145 Dirham (RM 140).

Virtually all the shops are manned by foreigners; women employees from the the Philippines and men from India or Pakistan. Now and then there were local women dressed from top to bottom in a black Hijab. The only part of the body which I could see is their eyes. Some of women appears to be attractive even if I cannot see much.

I have only run on a treadmill yesterday - 5 km. I have no plans to run outdoor even in the evening or in the morning. It is just too hot. Last night when I stepped out from the air-conditioned shopping centre for a while to look for a taxi, a blast of heat and hot wind struck me. This was at 9.30 pm and the temperature was probably 38 degrees C.

That's it for now from Dubai.
