Is Running for Everyone ?

John's blog mentioned he has injured the achilles tendon on his right leg. He had previously injured the left leg achilles tendon. He has to take time off from running.

Every runner I know has suffered from an injury.

Running put tremendous streses on the legs. Each step produces a force equivalent to 3 times body weight on the feet. In my case, it is 160 kg force on my feet for each step. On typical 8 km training, I take about 24,000 steps which means my feet has taken a cumulative force of 4,000 metric tonnes. How much is this ? It is equal to the weight of 4000 cars!

The forces on the knees are even higher ; 10 times body weight.

Because of this factor, running compared to other endurance sports has a higher risk of injuries to the legs.

Sometimes I see overweight individuals running at KLCC and I wonder why they should be doing it at all. Even worse, they are not wearing suitable shoes. For heavier runners, cushioned shoes are a must.

I am looking outside now- the weather is beautiful today but I will not be running. My right knee becomes sore after running 5 km.

I am wondering if I should cancel my Ipoh and Seremban half marathon runs. The next ten days will determine whether I will make it to the two races.

I've always wondered that myself. Sometimes I also feel that I'm not built for running. But these days, cos I love running (and I totally didn't during my younger years) now, and I don't want to give it up.

Being a total fatso, I was warned of the risks of injury when it comes to being a heavyweight runner. So when I really started I made sure I started out real slow and easy. Even now, I don't push it as much as some of you guys do, because I still enjoy running. I think injury might be the result of over-training also, pushing too much. Right now, I'm not pushing too much, just running and training enough to still enjoy it, plus races.

I also sometimes see the bigger recreational runners and see how they run and what they wear.. scary also man. Especially the shoes. Dunno what shoe they all wearing, from old lau kia shoes to football shoes, to Power shoes...scary!

you're talking about just not having the build for running huh? weeell, consider a runner wannabe who's also a middle-age makcik, who doesnt have any athletic background whatsoever('cept way way back in primary school maybe lol) with hubby, kids and friends who are not at all inclined towards an active lifestyle... and you can imagine what i'm up against lol!!! i dont really know how i ever got into this running thing..... but i just cant seem to stop now. i dont even know why i keep pushing myself to complete that lap, run that lil bit extra or start running in the first place but all i know is it feels soooo good once i get over the initial lethargy and i get into that flow... wow... cant even begin to describe the feeling!!! i'm not even close to what you guys are doing or attempting but i run my runs (the most i'm doing is about 4-5 km a couple of times a week)... though it gets a little lonely out there on my own its ok i guess coz i'm happy !!!
